What an incredible experience at the Spring Meeting of the Texas Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. I had the honor of being invited as the Eugene and Milicent Goldschmidt Lecturer, and it was truly a memorable and inspiring few days.
Held at Camp Mt. Lebanon in Cedar Hill, Texas, the meeting created a unique environment where students and faculty connected not only through outstanding science, but also through meaningful personal interactions. It was energizing to meet so many talented future scientists and to have the opportunity to serve as a judge, engaging directly with trainees and learning about their work and perspectives.
One of the most special moments of the meeting was celebrating the upcoming 100th birthday of Mimi Goldschmidt. Joining together to honor her legacy, while singing “Happy Birthday” with her virtually, was both joyful and deeply meaningful. Learning more about her impact made it even more humbling to be part of a lecture named in honor of Eugene and Milicent Goldschmidt.
The meeting concluded with inspiring sessions on education, where PIs shared innovative approaches to teaching microbiology to both undergraduate and graduate students. These discussions offered fresh perspectives and practical ideas that we can bring back to our own classrooms and labs.
Beyond the science, this meeting was about community, reconnecting with colleagues, building new collaborations, and strengthening a shared commitment to mentorship and discovery. An unforgettable couple of days!!!!
